Uganda spends close to $ 1million every year on treating people suffering from diseases related to unsafe Food with 14 who are believed to be admitted in Hospitals every day due to diseases related to consumption of poor quality food and 1.3 million people annually who suffer from diseases related to unsafe food.
According to Agnesi Kirabo The Executive Director food Rights Alliance during her address to the media ahead of World food safety Day that is being earmarked every 7th of June noted explained the different ways how people end up consuming unsafe food citing the poor chemical products which farmers use during planting, poor transportation of food ,poor storage facilities and even at house hold level .
Kirabo added that the issue of food safety is every one’s responsibility including the Government and consumers adding and raveled that already several food policies are being considered by the Government to enhance the regulations of food consumption and production in the country.
On the same note Dr. David Livingstone Ebiru elaborated the reason why UN initiated world Food safety Day mainly to create awareness in the population that every human being is entitled to safe food and also the danger for some one to consume unsafe food adding that as Uganda National Bureau of standards they have worked tirelessly towards improving the quality of food that people should consume through working with Government Laboratories to ensure that the food which is on markets is checked and its of good quality.
He further revealed that Several attempts have been put in place mainly to uplift the international standards of food as he also mentioned the quality Uganda’s maize flour how it has improved ever since Kenyan Government declared a ban on Uganda’s maize .
