The Uganda women parliamentary association ( UWOPA) has partnered with Land net Uganda to push for the succession amendment bill currently before the legal and parliamentary committee in a move to protect children born out of wedlock and spouses who are not legally married in the event the father dies.
While speaking during the training for parliamentary reporters on gender bills before parliament , the legal officer land net Uganda Rebecca Atayo said that under the current succession act Act the deceased children out of wedlock are not entitled to benefit from the deceased person property.
Atayo also says that once this bill is enacted as amended it will protect a number of spouses who have been pushed out of the residential houses by the heirs who are even their own children.
She adds that under the in the succession Amendment bill which seeks to replace the outdated succession ordinance Act of 1906 which was adopted from the English law ,they want the women and men who have been in cohabiting relationship will claim share from the deceased properties after adducing evidence to court.
