The commission commenced issuing nomination forms, supporter forms and nomination guidelines for Presidential Elections on August 10.
The EC Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama says that process is ongoing with aspirants picking supporter forms to collect signatures indicating the support of not less than one hundred registered voters in each of at least two thirds of all the districts of Uganda.
Relatedly, Byabakama announces the postponement of nominating candidates of Local Government Council elections to September 21st – October 1st from 7th – 17th September.
Meanwhile, the commission boss condemns some political leaders and supporters that organized and participated in mass rallies and processions without following the Standard Operating Procedures and guidelines from the Ministry of Health which risks the contraction of COVID-19 among Ugandans.
Meanwhile a new report by Afro Barometer released today sights Media-Only election campaigns likely to leave many Ugandans under informed, according to the released survey report by the Afro Barometer.
The reports indicates that regular news consumption by Ugandans is much lower for television at 31%, newspapers at 12%, internet at 13%, social media at 14% at radios have the most wide listenership at 80%.
The survey data shows that the proportion of Ugandans who can access and make use of various media channels remains relatively low and concentrated among certain demographics such as the young, the more educated, men, urban residents and people in the central region.
Releasing the report in Kampala, the Afro Barometer Co- National Investigator Francis Kibirige says that Media-Only campaigns may thus disadvantage more women than men and many poorer, less educated, older and rural citizens.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama says that they eased the channels of campaigns by use of community radios, holding simple gatherings, pinning posters and use of door to door campaign that will provide enough information to voters about particular candidates.
